The 2014 growing season began with plenty of sunshine and warmth throughout the Spring. About two weeks ahead of normal, the early June bloom continued with fantastic weather, leading to an above average fruit set. This required us to meticulously thin our vineyards in order to capture dense, vibrant fruit flavors. The summer was quite warm, seeing a near record number of 90º+ days.
At 750 feet in elevation, north-facing and windy, the Chardonnay from Spirit Hill Vineyard provides beautifully focused acidity and tension. The freshness of Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay shines through with lemon and grapefruit wound up with tight malic energy. Neutral oak barrel fermentation and aging builds upon its pronounced structure, bringing subtle creaminess woven into fine, salty mineral length.
With the sparkling harvest lasting 3 weeks and drawn out into early October, the 2007 Extended Tirage Brut is bursting with crunchy acidity and well developed fruit flavors. Aged upon the lees for 10 years before disgorgement, the wine is impressive for its depth and creamy layers of texture. Grilled peach, fig, honey, and citrus zest are layered with the mature complexity of toast and roasted nuts, bringing harmony to a graceful and elegant finish. The 2014 sparkling wine vintage in the Willamette Valley was pristine, showcasing the enticing generosity and focused definition the region has to offer. The pinot noir dominated blend provides impressive red-fruited dimension to the ripe pear, fig and roast hazelnut. The middle palate is invigorated with dynamic acid backbone and edgy minerality, bringing balance and concentration to the long finish.
Fermented to dryness and left upon its gross lees for 16 months in our oldest neutral oak barrels, Spirithouse Riesling is a wine of nuanced flavor and texture. Stylistically, we've taken a cue from our sparkling wine program by balancing naturally high acidity with supple autolysis. Jasmine floral, wet slate, and spicy nutmeg are balanced with deep layers of creamy concentration, all brought into focus with vibrating, juicy acid length. Serve at cellar temperature.
Entirely from Lone Star Vineyard, 2015 Nuthouse Pinot Noir exhibits the opulence and power of the Eola-Amity Hills while still retaining fresh fruit and vibrant acidity. Wild cherry, marionberry, roast fennel, and black tea frame its dense core, while the firm tannins persist through its long, creamy finish. After fermentation and gentle pressing, the wine was allowed to age elegantly on its lees for 16 months in French oak, of which 40% were new.
At 700 to 800 feet in elevation and awash with the Eola-Amity Hill's persistent drying winds, Spirit Hill Vineyard is always the last Pinot Noir to be picked and brought into the winery. Black cherry, raspberry leaf, and roast fennel frame its tight core, while the firm yet folded tannins persist through its long, vibrant finish. After fermentation and gentle pressing, the wine was allowed to age elegantly on its lees for 16 months in French oak barrels, of which 15% were new.
