Sustainability at Argyle
At Argyle, we are growers first. As an Oregon winery rooted in the Dundee Hills of the Willamette Valley, we farm with the long-term health of our land, our neighbors, and our community in mind. When you open a bottle of Argyle, you are choosing wine from a winery that treats sustainability as a daily practice. That commitment shows up in certified sustainable farming, regenerative vineyard practices, renewable energy, reclaimed building materials, and conscious packaging. We are proud of the progress we’ve made, and we keep working to do better — while crafting sparkling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay that reflect the intersection of people and place we’ve believed in since 1987.
Regenerative Vineyard Practices
We farm our estate vineyards regeneratively, going beyond certification to actively rebuild soil health.
Biochar — We produce biochar-enhanced compost in-house, returning carbon and nutrients to the soil, improving soil biology, and increasing water-holding capacity for long-term vineyard health.
Composting — Winery and vineyard organic materials are composted and returned to our estate vineyards, rather than sent away as waste.
Cover Crops — Custom cover-crop mixes reduce erosion, improve soil structure, add nutrients naturally, and encourage beneficial insects.
Reduced Tillage — Minimal tilling protects soil microbes, improves water retention, and reduces erosion.
Certified Sustainable Farming
Our estate vineyards hold third-party certifications that hold us accountable to independent standards:
• LIVE Certified (Low Input Viticulture & Enology) — one of the first Oregon wineries to earn it, back in 2008.
• Salmon-Safe Certified — protecting the waterways and aquatic habitat that neighbor our vineyards.
• Bee-Friendly Farming Certified — supporting pollinators and biodiversity across our estate.
These certifications back up what we practice in the vineyard every day.
Powered by Renewable Energy
Argyle purchases wind renewable energy certificates through Portland General Electric’s Green Future Enterprise program (formerly Clean Wind). In 2025, our participation supported:
- 1,159,743 kWh of wind renewable energy certificates
- The equivalent of 113 homes’ annual electricity use
Figures reflect 2025 participation and are based on unaudited data from PGE’s Green Future Enterprise program.
Biodiversity in the Vineyard
We do far more than grow grapes — we farm with wildlife in mind, because healthy ecosystems reduce our dependence on chemical intervention.
• Bird boxes: bluebird nesting boxes and kestrel boxes provide natural rodent and insect control and encourage native wildlife.
• Pollinator habitat: bee sanctuaries and pollinator plantings create habitat for beneficial insects.
• Block-by-block management: we make farming decisions based on each vineyard block’s needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our Tasting House & Community
The Argyle Tasting House in Dundee was built with sustainable construction in mind. Materials from the former winery — siding, roofing, lumber, and fixtures — were reclaimed and reimagined as design features.
The tables, shelves, bar tops, and wall siding were built from repurposed Douglas fir rafters that once lived high above the original cellar. It’s one of our most authentic sustainability stories, because guests can see and touch it when they visit.
We see sustainability through a social lens, too. We’re proud to support partners including ¡Salud!, AHIVOY, and Oregon arts organizations — investing in the people and culture of the Willamette Valley wine community. Learn more.
Conscious Packaging
Every packaging decision is a chance to reduce our environmental impact. From the bottle to the box, we continually evaluate how to make more responsible choices without compromising wine quality.
• Cork: We partner with Amorim Cork for a renewable, natural closure that supports healthy cork oak forests.
• Lighter-weight glass: We moved two of our highest-volume wines to lighter bottles, reducing materials and lowering transportation emissions.
• Thoughtful printing: We redesigned our kraft shipping boxes to use less ink and eliminated metal-based inks.
Across our winery and vineyards, we focus on composting, recycling, waste reduction, renewable packaging, and responsible day-to-day operations — closing the loop wherever we can.
